Whitewater Skill Improvement

The CCKEVM usually offers an advanced whitewater kayaking course each summer. This course is aimed at novice or intermediate paddlers who have completed at least one season of kayaking and wish to improve their whitewater kayaking skills.

Prerequisites:

  • Completion of one season in whitewater kayaking
  • Reliable rolling technique (successful two out of three times in whitewater)

 

Course Outline

  • Review of basic techniques: circular, propulsion, support strokes, sweep strokes, rolling...
  • Entering and exiting currents
  • Maneuvers on the eddy line
  • Active, passive, and angle strokes for turning
  • Forward and reverse sweep strokes
  • Front and back deck rolls
  • Letterbox
  • S-turn
  • Introduction to surfing and various maneuvers in a wave
  • Discussion on common kayaking injuries
  • Discussion on river hazards and hydrology
  • Introduction to basic rescue techniques
  • Explanation of active swimming in rapids
  • Games and exercises

 

The courses are taught by instructors accredited by the Quebec Whitewater Federation.
